Uno
Uno arrived from Quebec on September 14, 2017. He was transferred to us by the Humane Society International. He came from a group of dogs seized by the government in a neglect case. When reading the files of the dogs before we rescued Uno I know by the descriptions of the dogs behaviors that they had received little or negative socialization with people and that whoever we picked on the list would need some intensive love and patience before ready for placement in a forever home. B-1, who we call Uno, caught my attention as his description said he would flee and only bite if cornered meaning he didn't want to bite, he was just biting out of fear which could be corrected by proper socialization with people.
Uno howled the first eight nights he was here, hid his head in the corner when I opened the crate door to feed him and would only eat one type of canned dog food. He had to go potty in the house as he came with a loose leash so I couldn't risk taking him outside to potty and having him slip out of the collar. I feed him with my hand touching his food bowl to try to get him used to a human hand and associate it with something pleasurable.
I tried to put a harness on him one day using a pole and he half-heartedly bit at the harness and tucked himsef in the corner of his crate so I decided to have the vet try to put it on him as there are usually three people at the vet. On October 3rd Uno got his harness on at the vet and did pretty well only getting really scared when someone attached the strap under his belly. The harness allowed me to take Uno outside to go potty with one other dog and he enjoyed that for about a week until he managed to get both front feet out of the harness then I couldn't pull it off the rest of the way so he went to the vet again this time to have the harness taken off. He is now going potty on potty pads until he is comfortable with me touching him so if the harness needs adjusting I can do it.
Now, October 25th, Uno looks at me with curiosity instead of fear and will follow me when I call him. Although he still backs away if I reach to pet him, he sniffs me and ate food from my hand for the first time yesterday letting his tongue and teeth gently touch my fingers. He will eat multiple dog food flavors and likes pizza, egg yolk and popcorn. He is a gentle, smart, handsome boy. Uno has played with a couple toys briefly and usually trots around the kitchen with his tail wagging with the other dogs. He is very well socialized with other dogs which has helped him learn to become comfortable with me. He especially likes terriers I believe because there were other terriers in his previous home.
