What an exciting way to ring in the New Year! I picked up Dory, Thor and Tara New Year's Eve. Michelle from VT Paws meet me to meet Dory arriving as Dory was picked as a candidate to become a VT Paws service dog. Michelle spent some time with Dory the following day and a couple days later met her new dad. Will and Dory were a perfect match and Dory was adopted on Saturday January 8th. Also I am excited to announce that we have partnered with VT Paws and will donate any service dogs they need in the future. We will be doing some events together as well :) Tank was chosen to be a Pronature sponsored dog for January! Tara was adopted today, Thor will be adopted later this week and we are looking forward to three more dogs arriving January 28th and Patsy's puppies arriving February 4th. We will be having an adoption event at Orvis in Essex on January 28th from 11am - 2pm. |

While we were having our first snow here down in Texas Patsy had her 5 puppies! Aren't they adorable?
This is Emma, the yellow lab, and Toto, a Norwich Terrier mix we recently pulled from Hillsboro Texas. Toto, only a year old, has been in the shelter since the spring. Because he is so young and has spent so much of his life in the shelter he needs some work with socialization with people and dogs. He is fine with one person, but gets scared out in public around lots of people and needs to learn how to act appropriately around dogs as well.
Emma will be the first of a new program we are launching of pulling one medium or large size dog from Hillsboro, Texas as well as the small dogs. When talking to Betty, the shelter manager at Hill County Paw Pals, we realized that they have some bigger dogs that can't find homes or other rescues to take them too. One dog has been in their shelter for 3 years so we decided to help. What also made this decision possible is a generous offer by Sleepy Dog Kennels to board a dog for us if we can't find a foster home. Emma is a year and a half old, sweet and friendly with people and other dogs. Emma and Toto will be arriving November 12th. We will be selling people treats and dog cookies to raise funds for Patsy and her puppies tomorrow Saturday the 22nd from 11am - 2pm.
Patsy arrived at the Hillsboro Paw Pals shelter in Texas last week and is going to have puppies soon. Since we couldn't transport Patsy before the puppies arrive we decided to fundraise to help pay for the food, medical expenses, etc. Patsy and her babies will need before arriving in Vermont. Stand tuned for updates and if you would like to give a donation please email for address and we do have a donation container at Pet Food Warehouse in Williston.
One of my doggy daycare parents told me a story of how she had lost a fur baby due to GME so in honor of her fur baby and because I had never heard of GME myself I thought it would be a good idea to write a post about GME so other people know about it too.
Granulomatous Meningoencephalitis or GME is an inflammatory disease of the central nervous system. It is the second most common cause of inflammatory disease of the canine central nervous system though while researching online I couldn't find the percentage of dogs who suffer from the disease. GME is more common in small breed female dogs, especially poodles and terriers, of young and middle age and has a rapid onset. Lesions characteristic of GME are found mainly in the white matter of the cerebrum, brainstem, cerebellum and spinal cord. Since lesions resemble those similar to allergic meningoencephalitis it is believed GME is caused by an immune response and not infectious, though the response may be triggered by an infectious agent. Symptoms vary depending on how widespread the disease is and can include fever, neck pain, incoordination, head tilt, involuntary movement of the eyes, pacing, circling, depression, seizures, and sudden blindness. A CT scan or MRI will show lesions and the usual treatment is a combination of immunosuppressive drugs and a corticosteroid or radiation therapy for localized GME, but there is no cure at this time. Come meet Chipper, Amber and her two adorable pups, Alisha and Alley this Sunday at Orvis from 11am - 4pm. Hope to see you there :)
Hello Everyone. Hope you are all enjoying your summer. I know I am. I usually have a large vegetable garden. This year we are growing puppies and they are doing very well. Our first group of six puppies who arrived in Vermont June 12th have all found forever homes and Spirit and Jasmine, the adorable pups we pulled at six weeks old and had the honor of naming, arrived last Saturday and will be attending our adoption event at Orvis Sunday July 3rd from 11am - 4pm.
Little Joey finally has his cone off since his foot has healed and he started his antibiotics as part of his treatment for heartworms on the Summer Solstice. The antibiotics are to help weaken and destroy the heartworms before his injections. He loves rolling around in the grass and will love playing and walking once he is able. He is only allowed walking for potty breaks until after his heartworm treatment is complete. June has been a wonderful month of growth for the rescue. I am grateful to everyone who has helped us grow and I am looking forward to July :) It is the end of another exciting week. Earlier in the week I sent a puppy care package for the two Chihuahua pups who are in foster care in Mississippi and will be arriving in Vermont in July. We heard that the puppies who were going to be on transport had to stay in Mississippi a bit longer due to a fungal infection. The best news of the week came when we found out that Joey and Annie are really heartworm free! :)
Since we now will be having five adorable Texas cow pups coming on June 4th we will be having an adoption event the following Saturday, June 11th at Orvis in Essex from 11am - 4pm. If you are interested in meeting or adopting Cleo, Annie, Joey, Ruben or Ginger stop by Orvis to see us. If you fill out an adoption application and it is approved before the event you can meet and adopt a dog on the same day. It looks like it is going to be a beautiful weekend. If you are out and about Saturday stop by and see us at the Orvis store in Essex. Anyone who gives a donation to the rescue will receive 10% off their entire purchase at Orvis :) We will be at Orvis from 11am - 4pm.
